When and how often should I have an eye exam?

Taking care of your eyes is just as important as caring for the rest of your body—but many people aren’t sure how often they really need an eye exam. Whether you wear glasses, have perfect vision, or simply want to keep your eyes healthy as you age, regular eye checkups can catch problems early and keep your vision sharp for years to come. Here is our guideline for when to have an eye exam, depending on your age and eye health.

Children

  • First exam: Around 6 months old.
  • Next exams: At 3 years, then before starting school (~5–6 years).
  • School-age kids: Every 1–2 years, or as recommended.

Adults (18–60)

  • Every 2 years, if you have no vision problems or risk factors.
  • Every year, if you:
    • Wear glasses or contacts
    • Have diabetes or high blood pressure
    • Have a family history of eye disease (like glaucoma)
    • Use screens extensively (may need regular checks for eye strain symptoms)

Adults 61 and older

  • Every year, to screen for age-related conditions like:
    • Cataracts
    • Glaucoma
    • Macular degeneration

See an eye doctor sooner if you have:

  • Blurred or double vision
  • Eye pain or redness
  • Flashes of light or floaters
  • Trouble seeing at night
